28 December 2007 // Sketch: Spell-caster

And thus begins a month of foreshortening sketches.
The front arm looks okay but the back arm isn't as foreshortened as i want it to be.

27 December 2007 // Sketch: Kitsune Dom

I think i ought to spend a whole month or so doing sketches which involve foreshortening in some way or another. I could use the practise. 0 comments
25 December 2007 // Sketch: Santa's Present

Letter from child to Santa:
Dear Santa,
My Daddy is very worried about Global Warming. Could you please fix it?
- Virginia
Response from Santa:
Dear Virginia,
Tell your daddy to go live in an arctic desert for a few centuries before he complains about global warming. I ain't lettin' go of my tropical paradise.
- Santa
Merry Christmas, everybody, and remember to use your family's most high-mileage car while going to Grandma's house - we gotta cool things down before them elves get the idea to start slacking off.

24 December 2007 // Sketch: Kiru, sort of.

Started off as a sketch of an alien character from a story i wrote some time ago… and then went through a series of changes including Magical Goddess, Jungle Girl, and Anti-Arachnid Super-Hero.
Imaginary characters are like four-year-olds; sometimes the only way to get them to stay still long enough to draw them is to catch 'em sleeping. 0 comments
23 December 2007 // Sketch: M for Москва

I'm actually not sure how common the "M" hand symbol is in Moscow - i've only ever seen it once.
Then again, i've only been to Moscow once, for one day, two and a half years ago. And that one day was not exactly spent hanging with Muskovite hip-hop elite.
But - i don't know of any hand signs for St. Petersburg. And i had to do something to celebrate finally getting my hands on the latest copy of Time Magazine. 0 comments
22 December 2007 // Sketch: Уф!

I love cold weather but some of the other aspects of winter - i.e., half-melted piles of snow which re-freeze into large, sloping masses of ice - i could do without. 0 comments
20 December 2007 // Sketch + News: Still alive

Oi, haven't posted in a while.
Haven't done Illustration Friday for a while, either - but i've got a new screen-capture programme, and i think i might make a video of the next digital picture i do (which will likely be next week's Illustration Friday). Of course it depends at least partly on how much memory the programme takes up while it's running, if it makes Photoshop lag too much it'll be pretty self-defeating.
May be making the switch from Blogger to WP soon, because WP has built-in Pages which will make changes to the layout significantly easier. Tried to get it working already, and had it going good for a while before accidentally breaking it, so now i've got to see if i can fix it XP Which i don't have time to do any time soon; maybe some upcoming weekend. 0 comments

// IF: Alphabet

All sci-fi geeks know the true universal language isn't Esperanto… it's math. If you program a computer to make four beeps in a row, it will be four beeps on Earth or Mars, whether you represent it as 4, IV, 100, or - - - -. Likewise, if you combine two parts hydrogen with one part oxygen, it will be more or less the same wherever you go.
So here i present a little alien girl, learning the Earth version of the alphabet for the Universal Language.
I again feel obliged to point out if we ever meet aliens, we'll likely communicate with them by nukes. Admittedly, we may send the nukes in prime numbers: "Okay, if one doesn't kill them, we'll send two nukes, then three, then five, then seven, then eleven…"

09 August 2007 // IF: Missing

Okay, so technically nothing's missing. He knows exactly where all his parts are.
Of course, his "girlfriend" will be long gone by the time the maid finds him, and so he won't know where they are anymore… but for now he knows where they are.

26 July 2007 // IF: Poem

- I have no idea what the plastic-y thing they are wrapped in is supposed to be. I vaguely remember thinking, "He's absorbing her!" while i was drawing it. So apparently the red thing is part of the guy robot, who is, i don't know, eating the fembot. With his shirt.
Note to self: Get a full night sleep before drawing weird stuff. - This week i kept thinking about, but could not remember the title of, that one Kurt Vonnegut story in which a male scientist falls in love with a female scientist and wins her heart by having their computer write poetry for her, but the computer fell in love with the female scientist while trying to win her for the male scientist, etc., etc.… Come to think of it, i'm not even entirely sure it's by Kurt Vonnegut. All i remember for sure is having watched a short film based on it in my Lit. of Sci-Fi class. So if anyone knows what i'm talking about, leave a comment, because i've been slowly driving myself insane trying to figure it out.

// IF: Snap

I've never seen anyone do this Z-style of snapping in real life before. On TV, yes, virtually any time i watch anything with my little sister - and it's always either the "evil" cheerleader doing it, in an oh-bitch-you-just-got-pwned! sorta way, or a complete geek doing it, in a trying-too-hard-to-be-cool-and-failing-miserably way (and why are the cheerleaders almost always the bad guys in kid's TV nowadays? Seriously, it's like they're trying to say, "If you're a rich jock, you'll have all the friends you could ever want, but you'll be evil! Oh, you don't want to be evil? Well, then you have to be a dork with only two friends. Choose now! Muahahahaha!" Kim Possible is the only real exception to that pattern i can think of - and Betty, the evil co-captain of the cheerleading team, is still richer and more popular than Kim.)
This is one of those annoying pictures i didn't have time to finish properly. It came down to a choice between "stop now when it looks finished, but badly finished" or "keep working so there's two different quality levels in the picture, making it obviously incomplete, but with good parts here and there."
I'm pretty sleepy right now, so that may have skewed my decision. 1 comments

I'm leaving for PA tomorrow morning. I'm not entirely sure yet if this will be updated at all while i'm gone… this computer isn't set up to work with the internet where i'll be staying (yet), and i'm not bringing my scanner with me. If i can get the internet connection working, i'll update with some digital sketches. If not, i'll be back on the 18th. 0 comments
