25 October 2007 // IF: Grow

Half-assed not-totally-done IF illustration.
I'm trying to get into the habit of actually finishing IF pictures in under a week again. Except i don't have time to finish the picture and finish it well, so… Older Pic to the rescue!

20 October 2007 // IF: Open

"Open" was the theme word for Illustration Friday about… two full weeks ago, i think.
I was slow on this one, but i don't care.

I think, someday, i would like to learn how to work with metal, and build some models of all the little androids i've been drawing lately.

09 October 2007 // The Blues

Originally for the Illustration Friday theme, "The Blues" - it's a bit late.

This is my first time working in this particular style, so it's a little off, but overall i'm satisfied, especially with the robotic "blood."

Sappy random intergalactic peace illo.

Of course, if we were to discover alien life in the next century, someone on this planet would come up with some excuse to kill 'em all.

16 August 2007 // IF: Emergency

I always thought it must be horribly annoying to be a fireman and get called to rescue… a cat.
So, for that oh-so-tragic non-emergency of Fluffy going squirrel-chasing, i present… The Cat-Retriever.
The Cat-Retriever has a touch-sensitive claw which enables it to gently retrieve any sized cat, from a malnutritiouned stray kitten to an obese Persian. Attached to the claw is a small dispenser which sprays out a mild tranquilliser, just strong enough to calm the kitty without needing to worry the cat will lose its grip and fall before the claw picks it up.
Alternatively, you can just set out a can of tuna and wait for the cat to come down on its own.

09 August 2007 // IF: Missing

Okay, so technically nothing's missing. He knows exactly where all his parts are.
Of course, his "girlfriend" will be long gone by the time the maid finds him, and so he won't know where they are anymore… but for now he knows where they are.

05 July 2007 // IF: Twist

Sad to say the only thing i could think of with the theme of "twist" was an ice-cream twist.
Then again, i've lived near one ice-cream shoppe or another pretty much non-stop since i was seven, so frosty treats have probably been permanently jammed into my brain by now.

Didn't quite finish… ah well.

Anyway. We can all safely guess who will be picked last, yes?

31 May 2007 // IF: Cars

The results of a rather poor attempt at making a steampunk-style Hummer.
Gas-guzzler? No, this mofo's a coal- and water-guzzler!

Technically this is… um… not very good. At all. But i really love the design and so i am posting it anyway.
It took me three freakin' hours to design that engine and it would almost certainly never in a million years work. Shh, we will just pretend it works.

10 May 2007 // IF: Neighbour

Two thoughts kept coming to mind this week:
- The guy who asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbour?" right before J started in on his Good Samaritan parable
- The quote from Jesus which goes something like, "Whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me."
Prints available.

…and yes. My scanner lives again. Sketches forthcoming.

26 April 2007 // IF: Polar

This is probably the quickest Illustration Friday image i've done yet - basically just a quick sketch scanned into Illustrator and finished off with Live Trace. Eh. I kind of like the rough-edge style but i really wish i had the time to do a cleaner sketch and try it out that way, too.

I'll work on making some prints of this tomorrow. It's been a busy day and i still have to pack for a little trip to Philly. Yay.

[upd] Prints available here.
Not to engage in too much self-pimping, but i really love how the 4"x8" version came out. The extra space makes it look all lonely and foreboding, more so than the original. And at that size, even the most-expensive lustre print is only $2.99.

05 April 2007 // IF: Snap

I've never seen anyone do this Z-style of snapping in real life before. On TV, yes, virtually any time i watch anything with my little sister - and it's always either the "evil" cheerleader doing it, in an oh-bitch-you-just-got-pwned! sorta way, or a complete geek doing it, in a trying-too-hard-to-be-cool-and-failing-miserably way (and why are the cheerleaders almost always the bad guys in kid's TV nowadays? Seriously, it's like they're trying to say, "If you're a rich jock, you'll have all the friends you could ever want, but you'll be evil! Oh, you don't want to be evil? Well, then you have to be a dork with only two friends. Choose now! Muahahahaha!" Kim Possible is the only real exception to that pattern i can think of - and Betty, the evil co-captain of the cheerleading team, is still richer and more popular than Kim.)

This is one of those annoying pictures i didn't have time to finish properly. It came down to a choice between "stop now when it looks finished, but badly finished" or "keep working so there's two different quality levels in the picture, making it obviously incomplete, but with good parts here and there."
I'm pretty sleepy right now, so that may have skewed my decision.

21 March 2007 // IF: Total + Random news

Total freedom?
Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch on the definition… oh well.
My alternative was a computer geek totally immersed in WoW.

This is based on an old sketch of mine, one of about a billion tattoo designs from back in the days when i was planning on getting a tattoo. Never did come up with a design that i'd be willing to have permanently engraved in my flesh. Meh.

I'm going to add a special Illo Friday section to the main portfolio part of the site tonight. I may also rework the home page (which i almost never update) and redo the thumbnails in the rest of the portfolio. I don't really have anything else to do tonight so it's either redo the site a bit or order Chinese and watch TV all night…
I'm not going to break the site this time. Really.

02 March 2007 // IF: Communication

Well, i didn't finish the piece i was planning on doing for IF this week, but as a side project i made and decorated this cover for my pocket-sized reporter-style notebook. I suppose it counts as a textual illustration of sorts, and it definitely covers the topic of "communication," seeing as without letters the entire written form of communication would be nonexistent.

It's not entirely done; i'm going to put something in the larger rectangle at the bottom, too. I haven't decided exactly what yet, though.

22 February 2007 // IF: Gravity

Eh. I'm not really happy with this. I like the picture, but to illustrate "gravity…"
Then again, gravity's a tough word. You can't see it, you barely even notice its effects… even on sci-fi television, nobody really pays any attention to it, unless some malfunction causes the otherwise unexplained "gravity plating" to malfunction.

15 February 2007 // IF: Crash

Bit late for a Valentine's Day theme, but… whatever.
I'm not really into V-Day, anyway… for that matter, i'd completely forgotten V-Day was coming up when i started drawing this. Ha.

The first sign that you've overslept… stuff starts growing on you.

I couldn't resist putting this up on CafePress - it's not an alarm clock, but it tells time nonetheless.

01 February 2007 // IF: Red

So, i've been thinking about trying my hand at Illustration Friday for a while now. Last week, i finally decided it was time to get around to doing it.

Part of the reason for my decision is that i feel like my art's been stagnating a bit lately. I mean, yes i draw every single day and yes i'm a full-time art student but it's been a long, long time since i spent more than twenty minutes on something i wasn't getting graded on. And if i love to draw and create so much, why don't i ever finish a bloody project on my own?

Illustration Friday, i figure, is a pretty good compromise. I'm not entirely self-motivated but i don't have to do it either - which, oddly enough, makes me more likely to get around to doing it.

One thing i've already discovered is that i vastly underestimate the amount of time an image will take. I can probably blame my daily sketches for this - because i practice every single day, i'm now pretty good at whipping out a nice pen-and-ink in only about twenty minutes. The portraits i've been posting lately are of a quality that used to take me about four hours, and it seems that somehow in my head, the amount of time it takes me to work in other medium has also shrunk, when in practice, it really hasn't.

Which is why this picture here, even though i've been working on it all bloody week, is only about half-finished.

Also why the picture from last week didn't get around to being posted at all.

Well, 'nuff about IF, about the picture itself.

Obviously, the word of the week was red. I'll readily admit to being a bit of a communist (though i'll just as readily admit that communist governments have the rather glaring fault of being too easily corrupted) and i positively adore Russia, so i decided to go with a USSR theme for this. In the full pen sketch, the woman is holding a hammer in one hand and a sickle in the other. I was considering adding some text from an old Soviet political poster, too - something like «Родина-мать Зовет!» - but haven't gotten around to it yet.
